Overview

Using the USA TODAY Snapshot® " data from the USDA Statistics Service website, and information from a USA TODAY article, students will be asked to calculate percent change, do summations of data, observe trends, and offer explanations as to the reasons for those trends in agricultural production.

Key Steps

U.S. corn production in billions of bushels is given to students who are asked to analyze trends and patterns in percent increase/decrease. Students use the USDA website to be able to translate the data from bushels to yield per acre.

Students may use the Δlist function to calculate the increase from year to year simplifying the calculation of the percent annual increase/decrease.

After transforming the bushel data into bushel/acre data, students graph the 10-year trend and analyze it.
